40 years ago: Kennedy Murders Mary Jo

On July 20, 2009, in Politics, by admin

A nod to Debbie Schlussel for tweeting this earlier today. Mary Jo Kopechne actually died on July 18th, but Kennedy was formally charged with her death on July 20. However, since the accident that killed Mary Jo happened deep in Kennedy’s Massachusetts territory, you can bet your bottom dollar that there would be no way in Hades that he would be convicted.

Police Chief Dominic Arena was asked if he checked into the possibility that the accident was related to drinking. His response: “I did not ask taht question of the senator. There was no other physical evidence at the scene that there might have been drinking involved. I’m not pursuing that line at all.”

Of course, it helps good ‘ol Teddy that he waited until the morning AFTER the accident to report it to police. But that’s just a meaningless detail, right?

Good times never seem so good

On January 2, 2009, in Politics, by admin

Not long ago Neil Diamond revealed the identy of “Sweet Caroline” and she is now trying to become the newest Senator of New York. Here are the lyrics from this 1969 hit:

Sweet Caroline (Neil Diamond – 1969)

Where it began, I can’t begin to know when, But then I know it’s growing strong
Oh, wasn’t the spring, whooo, And spring became the summer, Who’d believe you’d come along

Hands, touching hands, reaching out, Touching me, touching you
Oh, sweet Caroline, Good times never seem so good
I’ve been inclined to believe it never would

And now I, I look at the night, whooo, And it don’t seem so lonely
We fill it up with only two, oh
And when I hurt. Hurting runs off my shoulder, How can I hurt when holding you

Oh, one, touching one, reaching out, Touching me, touching you
Oh, sweet Caroline, Good times never seem so good
Oh I’ve been inclined to believe it never would
Ohhh, sweet Caroline, good times never seem so good

And to think that Neil wrote this in under an hour before the recording session. You’d never think that lyrics this deep and complex would… oh shut up. This is just another quality product of the late 60s alcohol and/or drug abuse.

As to the subject of this diddy, Caroline Kennedy is trying to land the Hillary-vacated Senate seat in New York. Her qualifications? Um, give me a minute. Really. Google is searching… that’s right. SHE HAS NONE. Caroline makes Barack Obama’s political career fruitful and lengthy by comparison.

You see, Caroline is the poster child for Camelot. She enjoyed a childhood playing with her own pony at the White House. We can all relate to that, right? She’s reportedly worth about $400M, but she’s not really keen on Obama’s beloved concept of “transparency” since she refuses to release her financial or voting records.

I know it’s a soft holiday today, but maybe on Monday the press can cash in some of those frequent flyer miles to Alaska and apply the same level of experiential scrutiny that they poured over Sarah Palin? I mean, we know that a princess is far more qualified for political office than a friggin’ governor, right? She’s a Kennedy for gosh sakes. She’s entitled!

Some on the left think that Caroline offers a fresh change from the political norm. Her experience as a mother and caregiver is a good thing. A recent Washington Post article looks at Caroline’s lack of real work experience this way (source):

I prefer to view Kennedy as a bellwether, a case study in how things could be if only the workplace were more accepting of an unconventional CV, one that may brim with great experience and skills and talent but is also peppered with gaps and one-off projects and volunteering. … Maybe now’s the time to change our thinking about what constitutes the ideal CV.

…The reaction seems to be: If she hasn’t followed a straight-and-narrow, logical path, we simply can’t imagine her in the role under discussion.

This was written by Anne Glusker, “a freelance journalist living in France and the host of ‘Stir It Up,’ a weekly food program on Swiss radio.” Wow… she sounds like she’s really in touch with America. Let me see if I can find any Washington Post pieces fawning over Sarah Palin’s motherhood priorities and Everyman appeal.

Look at this HotAir article for some excellent points and video on this vapid princess. Carline told the NY Times “her experience as a mother, author and school fund-raiser, her commitment to public service and her deep political connections had prepared her for the job.” Yeah. That worked out great for Palin, didn’t it? I guess the silver lining to this ridiculous example of political dynasty cronyism is that we can look forward to another Tina Fey character that mocks and derides this obviously unqualified female candidate on a weekly basis. C’mon Lefties… let’s see that pre-election energy!

Allow me to borrow from the NY Times for a moment, who wonders if “Ms. Kennedy’s unwillingness to disclose personal information suggests she lacks the stomach for the kind of intrusive questions that could come her way as a candidate in 2010.” I tend to think the same think about Obama.
